Habit Tracking

Habit Tracking

As the name suggested, Habit tracking is a simple and yet powerful way to measure whether you did the habit or not.

It confronts you with evidence and keeps you honest to yourself.

And according to the book Atomic Habits, tracking your habits leverages multiple laws of behavior change.

It makes a behavior more obvious, attractive and satisfying.

A simple and most basic form of tracking your habits is through a calendar.

You can use the calendar to cross off the days where you stick to your habits and it shows clear evidence if you kept your promises or not.

And when you stick to your habit, tracking your habit can also be used as a motivational source as you can see your progress clearly in sight.

A great mantra that you can follow; “Don’t break the chain”

When you see that you have stuck to your habits for a long period of time. It isn’t worth breaking the chain. And, that’s where habit tracking plays an important role.

It gives a subtle reminder of how far you have come.

And of course, there are times that make it inevitable to work on building a habit.

And then I would recommend you to follow James Clear’s rule;

Never miss twice.

A one time mistake can happen but when it happens often. you will break out of your habit cycle.

And this has happened to me quite often when I started working out.

I worked out for a long period of time and then quit and then started again and quit again.

And this vicious cycle of going to the gym and quitting the gym took many years of my life .

And that’s all because I broke the rule of never missing twice.

I learned that it is better to show up even though it might look like it’s pointless than breaking the streak that might ruin the whole habit.
