Choose the right field of competition

field of competition

I do not believe that everyone is born equal. In a sense that not everyone is gifted with the same preset as others. Some are tall and some are short. Some have a disability and others do not. Some are gifted with perfect language and others struggle on a daily basis.

What is important is that people aren’t born equal but they are born with equal opportunities.

And the way to maximize your success is to choose the right field of competition.

In short; your genes do not determine your destiny. They determine your areas of opportunity.

Just like sports, businesses and playing an instrument. Some people are gifted with these skills and others are better at different things.

The same principle applies to habits too.The habits that you choose are easier to perform if it aligns with your natural gift and ability.

“Play the game that is in your favor and it will be easier to succeed. Play the games against your odds and you can expect hardship.”

According to the book atomic habits, a way to identify areas of opportunity is through understanding your personality.

The Big Five breaks down the personality traits in spectrums which are;

  • openness to experience
  • conscientiousness
  • extroversion
  • agreeableness
  • neuroticism

Understanding the big five and where you belong on the spectrum can significantly help you identify the areas of opportunities.

As this will help you understand your deeply rooted preferences.

So, choose the habits that best suit you, not the one that is most popular.

A common approach to find the right field of competition is through trial and error. Find the right field through testing. However, the downside of this approach is that we don’t have all the time in the world.

So, it is recommended to use this approach with the explore/exploit trade-off.

Every new activity has a period where you explore. The goal is to try out as much as possible.

So, try out different methods to build habits.

Explore these habit forming tactics.

If it works, exploit the tactics.

If not, explore until you find the things that work for you.

And if you can’t find a game that’s at your odds. Create one.

“When you can’t win by being better, you can win by being different.”
